London Luton Transfer to Camden Town (WC1)

London Luton Transfer to Camden Town (WC1)

Londoners believe that everyone should have access to culture and as much as possible for free, therefore one of the things they offer is gratuity to the most important museums. It is the only city that does this thing, there are not currently any European cities competitors in this field. All major cities offer free days or offer some discounts for the tickets or they have only a few free museums – like Paris which has about 15.

British Museum collections are covering thousands of years of history of the most important civilizations which are organized in 94 galleries spread over 3 floors with a total area of 33 impressive hectares.

British Museum cannot be seen in a day and the ideal is to go see one area per day. Among the famous exhibits that you can admire are the following:

– Marble sculptures from the Parthenon (room 18) – this was taken in 1800 from the Temple of Athena on the Acropolis. The English have not returned it because they believe that it is better preserved here;

– Rosetta Stone (Hall 4) – a slab of black granite on which the same text was encrusted in three languages which offered the possibility to deciphering the Egyptian hieroglyphics. It was found by Napoleon’s army in 1799 in the Nile Delta;

– Ship Portland (room 70) – the oldest glass dish (from around year 0) with ornaments in relief;

– Egyptian Mummies (room 62) – you can see Ginger’s body preserved which was an Egyptian from 5500-3100 BC;

– Treasure of Sutton Hoo – found on a funerary vessel dating intact in Suffolk from VII century;

– Treasure of Mindelhall (room 49) – a set of dishes with representations of Bacchus (god of wine) and silver tableware from sec. IV which is also from Suffolk.

An interesting project that the British Museum has currently in collaboration with BBC is that you can enjoy the human history in 100 objects telling the story of our land. You can watch and listen to just one episode or more and after a while you will feel more human and you will understand where we’re coming from.

The British Museum is located on Great Russell Street, WC1B 3DG and it is opened daily from 10 am to 5:30 pm (last entry 4:30) and Friday is opened until 8:30 pm (last entry 7:30).
